Outreach
YOUTH OUTREACH
As part of the AQRC mission, the Center promotes programs that encourage young women and members of underrepresented groups to consider careers and/or graduate education in science and engineering.
School year programs
Groups come to campus during the day to meet leading professors in air quality research, see graduate and undergraduate students in labs and classrooms, and participate in hands on activities. This program engages younger learners in health, climate change, and pollution and introduces them to the college setting by seeing the campus and eating lunch in the dining halls.
Summer programs
Groups participate in the School year programs (above) but in addition, can take advantage of overnight activities, such as spending the night in the dormitories, eating in campus dining halls, and participating in campus recreation. This more in depth program more fully immerses students in the college experience. All programs can be tailored to group needs and can include other activities such as swimming, bowling, biking, and crafts.
In the past we have hosted Girl Scout Troops and junior high school students. The program is growing; we welcome Girls Scout Troops, local schools, and other interested groups.
Quotes from Participants:
“The trip was fantastic!” Davis Junior High Teacher
“It was a great experience!” 9th grade student
“I think your program was terrific, and I support it wholeheartedly!” Girl Scout Troop leader

CONFERENCES
The Air Quality Research Center (AQRC) hosts several national and international conferences annually, including:
- The Annual UC symposium on Aviation Noise & Air Quality (title varies)
This event is the key gathering on aviation’s environmental impacts and brings together stakeholders from all areas including airports, airlines, the FAA, the EPA, aerospace manufacturers, communities, local government, researchers. environmental organizations and consultants to talk about the regulations, operations, technology, health effects and policy related to aviation emissions and noise.
- Green Acres, Blue Skies: Agriculture and Air Quality
Our second GABS was held June 2009. This conference brings together regulators, commodities planners and researchers to discuss innovative solutions for addressing mitigation of the air quality impacts of agriculture and also how ag is likely to be affected by pollution and climate change.
- Atmospheric Chemical Mechanisms
This biennial conference brings together researchers from around the world to look at how atmospheric chemicals work in our atmosphere to generate pollution and climate change.
- International Aerosol Modeling Algorithms (The IAMA Conference)
This biennial conference brings together modelers and researchers from around the world to look at how atmospheric chemistry models can be improved to better understand the effects of pollution on our planet.
