Graduate Programs
- Biological and Agricultural Engineering
- Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering
- International Agricultural Development
Areas of Research
- Transportation - Environmental impacts of bioenergy including biofuels.
- Agricultural Emissions - Emission factors from agricultural burning; emission simulators for human exposure experiments.
- Global Climate Change - Greenhouse gas emissions from biomass power systems, biofuel production, and energy-integrated waste management.
Research Summary
- My research is focused on the thermochemical conversion of biomass for energy, including the use of residues and energy crops. The research also includes work on feedstock logistics, environmental impacts, economics, and systems analysis and optimization. Experimental research includes fuel and ash characterization studies using laboratory scale fluidized bed and moving bed reactors and high temperature controlled-atmosphere furnaces. The work also involves developing vegetation burning simulators used in direct human inhalation studies for studying health impacts of emissions from biomass burning. I serve as executive director of the California Biomass Collaborative, co-chair of the UC Davis Bioenergy Research Group, and interim-director of the UC Davis Energy Institute.
Teaching Summary
- I teach energy systems (EBS 216) and solar energy (EBS 218) courses at the graduate level, and heat and mass transfer (EBS 125) at the undergraduate level. I also teach a freshman seminar course on power (FRS 003).
